Description: Amsterdam, by Gerard van Keulen, Aen de Nieuwe Brug. Met Privilegie. No date [Ca 1710 - 1720]. Original copperengr. map, meas. appr. 50 x 59 cm. Good platemarks, blank margins 1- 2 cm. Published by van Keulen and drawn by 'Ian Belkmeer Ph. et Diopt. L. Te Enckhuysen'. Map from van Keulen's 'Zee-Atlas' or 'Zee-Fakkel'. The city of Enckhuysen to the left upper corner, with the projected harbour and harbour walls protruding to the right. Top right an inset engr. view 'Verbeelding van de Mond van de Nieuwe Haven', 17 x 22.5 cm., showing the entry to the harbour, the 'Zuyder Zee', 'Elzenburg' to the left and the lighthouse to the right. Lower right the legenda and 'Schaale van 500 Rynlandse Roeden'. Lower central part a sea chart indicating depths and shallow parts, sandbanks, buoys and tons etc off the coast of Enkhuizen. IV, p. 379, item 14 sub [276]: Tooley, Map makers, pp. 351 - 353: Joannes van Ceulen was the founder of this family firm of 'chart and instrumentmakers, publishers nautical, text books & sea law, shipbuilding, almanacs & c. Existed as a firm for over 200 years...'. In 1704 his son Gerard van Keulen [1678 - 1727] took over, 'Hydrographer to the Dutch East India Company in 1714. Before his early death at the age of 49, he revised and reissued his father's atlases and himself added new maps, some of exceptionally large size, culminating in about 1710 with an edition of over 180 charts.':
