The coelum is still used as an important taxonomic criterion": Nordenskiöld 529/30 and i.l.c.: "Their theory has nevertheless played its important part and has called forth abundant special research-work of value for all times": G&M 502. The 2 brothers Hertwig worked together in the period from 1879 to 1883. They were the most promising students of Ernst Haeckel and Carle Gegenbauer and cooperated on research into embryological questions, specifically on the theory of the coelom, the fluid-filled body cavity, as an explanation of the middle Keimblatt, which brough important realizations in the field of embryology. The theory assumes that all organs and tissues develop differently from three primary tissue layers, during animal embryogenesis. [1881].
