Preface and life of Forsyth, by Isaac Forsyth dated 1816; Forsyth's travels to Italy in 1802 - 1803 took him to Genoa, Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Siena, Rome, Ancona, Venice and many other places. In general the most important churches, palaces, works of Art and Architecture in these cities are discussed. Joseph Forsyth was born in Elgin, County of Moray, in 1763. His family was in the merchant business. Forsyth had a history of pulmonary complaints and was of feeble health. His great wish was to embark on a tour to Italy. He did so in the years 1802 and 1803, at the end of this year he was taken captive by the police at Turin on may 25th 1803, under order of Bonaparte to arrest all british citizens travelling in his dominions. Forsyth would be interned in various places in France and would not return home for 13 years, until May 1814. Physically and mentally a broken man he died September 1815.
