Studied medicine at Leiden where he matriculated on August 26, 1739 and graduated with a thesis 'de phrenitide vera' on June 25, 1745. He settled in Amsterdam where he lived from 1747 to 1767. In this period he corresponded on a regular basis with prof. Gaubius. Bernard edited quite a number of works of the ancient Greek writers on medicine and provided Latin translations and comments.
