Description: Leidae, Apud Joannem à Kerkhem, 1727. Sm 8vo. W. engr. allegorical front., woodc. vign. on pr. title & 15 engr. pls. (of which 2 fold.). Original 18th c. marbled brds, spine renewed in 19th / early 20th c. half grey-brown clf., w. giltlettered title shield. (Corners and edges of covers rubbed.). [n2, A-Z8, 2A-2I8, 2K8 -2O8, 2P2]. (IV, 568, X (Corrolaria), XVIII (Index)n pp.). (Small oval libr. st. center lower blank margin of pr. title; uncut). The second volume, first part (1-50) only of the latin transl. of '... zeldzame aanmerkingen...', containing observations 1 - 50 and Van der Wiel's Leyden thesis 'De Nutritione foetus...', but a complete publication in itself. Krivatsy 11386: DMB, 1865/6: '. . .in 1672 Stalpart v.d.Wiel joined the field army. According to Haller and Swammerdam he had much skill in injection techniques, embalming and mummification.' The second part, [observations 51 to 100] never appeared .Translated into Latin (1687 and 1727), French (1758 and 1780): Mettler, 671, 734: 'The chief pre-19th cent. writers on spina bifida and hydrorachitis, in addition to Morgagni, were....C. Stalpart van der Wiel...':NNBW vol. I, 59: Banga, pp. 640/4: Latin translation of 1727 of a work of pathological anatomy of some historical interest. He described ichthyosis. He injected the vessels and paid attention to embalming of bodies. Another interesting observation, referring to Morgagni, was the listening to the heart in case of Hydrops pericardi (an early example of auscultation): Hirschberg par. 431: Stalpart vander Wiel cites a case in which part of a sword penetrated the eye and the patient lived to tell the tale.: Waller coll. item 9190:
