Cohen de Ricci, c. 348 (edition 1731 in 12mo): A very good copy in its original binding of Erasmus' 'L'éloge de la folie', first published in this form in [Leiden] 1713 [see Waller item 19602], improved and appended and added comments by the dutch humanist Gerard Lister [Lindeboom, DMB, c. 1208 - 1209, 1470/80 - after 1521], translated by Gueudeville. On *3 recto, at the end of the dutch privilege [dated May 1715], we read that Pieter van der Aa, the original owner of the right of translation, sold his rights to R. & G. Wetstein, who in turn sold it to François Honoré. The Honoré editions of 1731 and 1735 have an engraved frontispiece, and engraved title, 6 fold. plates and 75 ills. Our copy, published 1728, only has an engraved frontispiece depicting 3 figures carrying tags that contain the names of a.o. the cardinal sins; there is no engraved plate containing the portraits of Erasmus, Morus and Holbein. Erasmus in his 'study' is depicted on the half page engraving on page 192.: See also 'Erasmus en Leiden', exhibition catalogue 1986, pp. 70 - 71 on this edition and its history of pirated editions and reprints [which numbered at least 22 in the 18th c].
