[a12, e3, A-R12 (R12 blank); 2A12]. (XXX, 373, XXXIII, II (blank)pp; 22, II pp.). (Authorized by the author with his signature in ink at the end of the 'Epître' on â3 recto). (All edges speckled red.). (First and last lvs. some light foxing / browning.; throughout a clean and minimally foxed / browned copy.). First edition. Apart from the spine ends and corners [easily remedied by a good binder] a very good, contemporary bound copy of this rare and important publication on ophthalmology. Hirschberg ¶ 359: Norman cat. vol. II, item 1880 & 1881: Albert, Source Book, 1995: 'In 1707 Saint-Yves became the first in history to extract a cataract en masse.': Gorin, p. 44: '... accepted the new concept of cataract in his book 'Nouveau Traité...'(1722). He believed that aqueous formed by transudation from the choroid, and that the retina was the organ of vision. He considered glaucoma to be a late change of cataract.': Waller, 8406: G&M 5827: 'Records the removal of a cataract "en masse" from a living subject.': Becker coll. item 322: 'Saint Yves extracted a cataractous lense which had been dislodged and forced into the anterior chamber by an unsuccesfull attempt at depression. While this was the author's only published work, it assured him a permanent place in the history of opthalmology. Shastid cites seven innovations and observations first announced in this treatise, including the first extensive use of silver nitrate in treating eye diseases, the earliest use of silver nitrate in cases of ophthalmia neonatorum, and the first exact description of gonorrheal ophthalmia. ['and the first descriptions herpes zoster ophthalmicus and the ophthalmic changes in variola; he reports on his extensive and systematic application (for ulcers, abscesses, and similare lesions) of silver nitrate, which, although it had been discovered and occasionally employed earl;ier, Saint Yves was the first to use with regularity.' [=Albert Source book item 1995].: The 'Epître' is signed in ink in autograph by the author, to guard against forgery, as noted in the 'Avis': First edition. ad 2) Waller, 8407: Norman Cat. vol. II, item 1881: 'Saint Yves's response to criticism by Burchart David Mauchert was originally published in 1723; it was later incorporated into the second edition of the Traité.'
