Description: Amsterdam, by d'Erfg. van Paulus Matthysz, 1702. - 1705. 4to. Meas. appr. 3 parts. in 1. W. 10 [large] fold. engr. pls. [pp. 58, 64, 71; p. 12, 21 [2x], 27, 28, 31, 33]. [One of the largest views is engraved and etched by Stopendael after Listingh, see note below]. (This copy without the Stopendael engraving of Muiden from 'De Zegepraalende Vecht', present in some copies). 18th c. comb marbled limp paper covers, spine restored and renewed w. japan paper tinted in a perfect matching colour. [n4, A - F4, G2, H - I4, K1, L4, N2; 2A4 - 2E4; 3A2]. (VI, 86; 40; 4 pp.). (Visible waterspots in 3 of the large fold. plates.). (Uncut.). Copy on good quality paper, uncut. Important work by Listingh discussing the measures to be taken against flooding / inundation in the area of Holland and West Frieland [Now called North Holland], using dikes. The technical construction of these dikes Illustrated in detail in the fine plates in this publication. BdH 2784 - 2785: Van der Aa, L. p. 162: Listingh, a lawyer and engineer from Amsterdam, mainly remembered for his design of a dome church ['Coupelkerk'], which never made it further than the drawing board. His other claim to fame is this publication on the construction of dikes made up of partitions and placed at oblique angles. The publication came about [a.o things] as a result of a dike breach between Amsterdam and Muiden on the 5th of April 1702. The very large folding plate [ca 60 x 50 cm] at the end of the second part was engraved and etched by Stopendael. It depicts an invention by Listingh called the 'Zee-Dwinger' [sea- or wave (en)forcer). Cat. NHSM, vol. I, p. 329:
