II, F 149: Translation by Freud. 'Bernheim's fame as an expert on hypnosis attracted the attention of Freud, whose interests, during the late 1880s and early 1890s were shifting from neurology to psychology. In 1888, Freud began translating Bernheim's "De la suggestion et des ses applications à la thérapeutique" ... to which he contributed an important preface containing a discussion of the controversy between Charcot's Salpêtrière School and the Nancy School of Bernheim and Liebeault. The case histories in vol. II were translated by Otto Springer, whose contributions Freud acknowledged in a "Translator's Postscript" [Nachwort des Uebersetzers].': G&M comp. 4995.1: Jones, Sigmund Freud, Life and Work, vol. I, pp. 250/1 & 261/3: Grinstein, 317: Crabtree, comp. item 1127, pp. 266/67 (or. ed. 1886): In the first part of the book Bernheim discusses the nature of hypnotism in direct contrast to that of Charcot, who believed hypnotism to be a pathological condition based on physiological processes. Bernheim saw hypnotism as a purely psychological condition. The second part of the book discusses suggestion as a therapeutic agent and is followed by a large number of case histories. The final chapter draws attention to the dangers 'to be guarded against in the use of hypnotism and suggestion. This work became the basic text used by the adherents of the Nancy School and holds a unique place in the history of hypnotism.' In original condition, needs binder's attention.
