Brit (11th ed.) vol. 11/12, pp. 257/8: 'Between Battel's time [1590] and 1846 nothing appears to have been heard of the gorilla or pongo, but in that year a missionary at the Gabun accidentally discovered a skull of the huge ape; and in 1847 a sketch of that specimen, together with 2 others came into the hands of Sir R. Owen, by whom the name "Gorilla savagei" was proposed for the new ape in 1848.': These zootomic - zoological studies by Hartmann are based on the rich finds brought back by the members of the German Loango expedition and material gathered by Dr. Oskar Lenz. Hartmann not only describes the build of chimpansees and orang-outans, but also compares their organization and way of life with that of humans.
