Anno 1628.], 1628. [The incomplete text of Ter Does: The Hague, 1668]. 4to. 3 parts in 1 vol. W. large engr. alleg. vignette [Bacchus on his wine barrel, surrounded by fauns distributing wine to farmers, soldiers etc] on title 'Ick strii op sno eerde' [Anagram 'Dirick Pieterssoon'] & 4 engr. textills. [pp. 19, 69, 77, 133, C2, I3, K3, R3 resp.]. Very good contemp. full vellum, title in contemp. ink on spine. (Upper cover top righthand corner a stamp 'F.W.Craandijk'). [(:4, A - R4, S2]. (VIII, 140 pp.). (Upper blank margin cut a bit short by the binder, sometimes cutting sl. into the running title.). (Upper paste down a paper ticket 'Ex Libris L.S. van Praag'). (Overall some light browning; First 5 lvs. (Title plus (:2-4), A1) and last 10 lvs. (from Q1 to end) a visible waterspot, covering the page; in the rest of the text this watersp. is present but quite unobtrusive; textengr. 4 w. a brown (ink?) spot; lefthand blank margin throughout some small puncture marks.). (The Ter Does bound before w. XVI [of XVIII, pr. title missing], 143, I ('Nota folio 108') pp.). (No plates and map in the Ter Does). The ter Does is the first publication in this vellum binding, but is without its printed title and plates. Text is, however complete. This description of the Hague is quite unimportant next to what is really important in this 4to binding: the FIRST AND ONLY edition of 'Bacchus Wonder - wercken, 1628 and Suyp-Stadt of which only a small number of copies are available in Dutch libraries. Celle du titre représente Bacchus sur son tonneau, entouré de faunes qui distribuent du vin ...': Scheurleer, 153: Scheepers, (Beijers, 1947), 144: Frederiks & Van den Branden, p. 604 - 605: Born in Emden 1581, joined the bookseller's guild in Amsterdam where he conducted his business 'op 't Water' in 'Die Witte Parsse'[the white press], where the family name comes from. In the Guild records he is entered under D under the name 'Dirck Pieters Wittepers'. 10.5 x 15 cm depict (1) an allegorically presented banquet of animals. (in which the sort of animal mirrors the type of drunkenness). (2) a banquet of men and women smoking, drinking and vomitting in true Breughelian style. (3) men drinking heavily and practising the bow and arrow, a frightened (servant?) figure against the doorway to the back left of the engraving, obviously in anxious anticipation of things to come. I guess he hopes for 'a steady hand'. (4) depicting a gigantic wine barrel, surrounded by a crowd of men brandishing cups, mugs and carafes in eager anticipation. In the background Bacchus is driven around in his open carriage, with his entourage.: Verlaan & Grootes, Suyp-Stad of Dronkaerts Leven.
