DSB V, pp. 171 - 181: Freud's first studies were on the Reissner cells in Petromyzon Planeri 'He also studied the structure of nerve fibres in living crayfish ...': Jones, Life and Work, vol. I, pp. 53 - 54: The same general problem with Petromyzon '... was the aim of Freud's next investigation which he conducted by his own choice in the summer months of 1879 and 1881. This time the objects were the nerve cells of crayfish. Here he examined the live tissues microscopically, using a Harnack No. 8 lens - a technique which, at that time, was very little known, undeveloped and difficult - and he reached the definite conclusion that the axis cylinders of nerve fibres are without exception fibrillary in structure. He was the first to demonstrate this fundamental feature. ... This study ... excels in the choice of its method, the exacting care given to its development, the caution shown in the argumentation, the direct approach to the key problem as well as its precise, definite and significant results.': Norman Coll. vol. II, F5: 'Bernfeld and others have stated that in this and in his earlier researches Freud reorganzied that nerve cells and fibres were a single unit, thus paving the way for the neuron theory a number of years before Waldeyer-Hartz announced it in 1891.': Norman Sale III, 1346: Grinstein, 10353: Grinstein bibliogr. item 5: Stanford, Freud exh.
