PMM item 244 and the Exh. cat 1963, item 386: 'Fichte was a devoted disciple of Kant but his own theories developed during his professorship at Jena 1794-1798, went beyond Kant in completing and enlarging his works, by demonstrating that all the necessary conditions of knowledge can be derived from a single principle, and consequently a complete system of knowledge can be achieved. In the 'Wissenschaftslehre' the way is prepared for the later Hegelian dialectic, and it proved a basis for all 19th c. German philosophical speculation.' The practical side of his theory of philosophy (or 'Wissenschaftslehre') Fichte explained in his 'Foundation of Natural Right '[1796] and in the publication here offerded, in English 'System of a Theory of Morals' [1798].
