Hirsch II, 53/4: Clot-Bey (1793 - 1868) was a French surgeon, who spent many years in Egypt organzing public and military health: Wellcome II, 361: Blackmer cat. 370: Blackmer sale 497: 'In 1824 Clot was appointed surgeon to the Egyptian army by Mehmet Ali, whom he came greatly to admire. He organised healt services in the country, both civil and military, ran a hospital at Abou Zabel and set up a school of medicine. After the cholera epidemic of 1831 Mehmet Ali gave him the title of "Bey". He was sent on a mission to France on Mehmet's behalf in 1839, and continued to serve in Egypt until 1856.': An extensive introduction to Egypt and its culture.
