Description: Verona, Appresso Francesco dalle Donne, 1595. Small 4to. W. a charming woodcut of a shepherd with a staff [folio 6 verso] accompanied by a dog. 17th c. limp vellum, thong laced. (Recased at an early date? old endp.). [A-Z4, Aa4]. (96 lvs.). (A vague watersp. in righthand blank margin of folio 1 - 12 & lower margin of folio 71 to end; a brown spot in upper inner margin of appr. first 60 folio; ). (quires I and M light browning.). A Good copy. Joecher vol. I, p. 1295: BMSTC, p. 123: Durling 664, idem 663 note 'Mainly an answer to Cl. Gelli's 'Riposta ad un certo libro contra medici rationali' (1584) and a defense of the author's 'Flagello de 'medici rationali': On leaves 87 - 96 we find: 'Hippocratis libellus de medicorum astrologia': Baass, p. 396: 'Bovio (Th. Bovius, about 1592), who called himself 'Zefiriel' after the guardian angel, whose name, singularly enough, he knew - were all zealous propagators of the 'Arcana' (which means in the alchemy the elixer or the stone of wisdom).': Partington vol. II, 309: 'Willis gives the methods of preparation ... (a.o. of) 'Hercules of Bovius', a solution of mercuric and gold chlorides described by Th. Bovius (d. 1609), an Italian physician who claimed to have a familiar spirit, Zephyriel, and potable gold and extract of hellebore with occult virtues.':
