(of which 4 fold.; 2 of the fold. pls. righthand margin some chips and fraying, some soiling.) Contemp.vellum [n1, *8, n2, A-Z8, 2A-2H8]. (XVIII, II (portrait, recto blank) 492, IV (Index and errata) pp.). (Towards the end a number of lvs. w. sl. wormh. to the blank righthand margin. No loss of text). (The leaf preceding the title with a 6 lines dedication in ink to the pharmacist Franciscus van Sevenhuyzen, and signed in autograph by Stalpart vander Wiel). The second volume only, 1686, containing observations 1 - 50, (DMB Lindeboom, c. 1866:) 'The second part of the second volume never appeared.':. Krivatsy 11385 [2 vols. 1682 - 1686]:DMB, 1865/6: ". . .in 1672 S.v.d.W. joined the field army. According to Haller and Swammerdam he had much skill in injection techniques, embalming and mummification." The second volume [observations 51 to 100] never appeared .Both works were translated into Latin (1687 and 1727), French (1758 and 1780): Mettler, 671, 734: "The chief pre-19th cent. writers on spina bifida and hydrorachitis, in addition to Morgagni, were....C. Stalpart van der Wiel...":NNBW vol. I, 59: Banga, pp. 640/4: First ed. of a work of pathological anatomy of some historical interest. He described ichthyosis. He injected the vessels and paid attention to embalming of bodies. Another interesting observation, referred to Morgagni, was listening to the heart in case of Hydrops pericardi (an early example of auscultation): Hirschberg par. 431: Stalpart vander Wiel cites a case in which the largest part of a sword penetrated the eye and the patient healed": Author's present copy to his grandson Fr. v.
