Using vital dyes, and in particular trypan blue, Goldmann studied the permeability of the barrier. By the intravenous and intrathecal administration of trypan blue he found that the barrier was impermeable to its larger molecules, and he concluded that the choroid plexuses were the site of the holdup.... In it [the monograph] he referred to chemotherapy of the nervous system which was not, however, to be introduced for 30 years.'
