First edition of the 3rd volume, which forms the appendix to the volumes 1 and 2, published 2 years earlier, dealing with the 'Calcul différentiel et du Calcul intégral' (publ. in 1797 and 1798). DSB VII, pp. 549 - 551: Lacroix, Sylvestre Francois, 1765 - 1843, mathematics. 'The first volume of Lacroix's treatise on the calculus, in which he "united all the scattered methods, harmonized them, and joined his own ideas to them", appeared in 1797. It was followed by a second volume in 1798, and a third appeared in 1800 under the title 'Traité des différences et des séries' ... This monumental work constituted a clear picture of mathematical analysis, documented and completely up to date. While Lacroix followed Euler on many points he incorporated the various advances made since the middle of the 18th c. The treatise is a very succesful synthesis of the works of Euler, Lagrange, Laplace, Monge, Legendre, Poisson, Gauss, and Gauchy, ...': The bibliography by Itard in the DSB lists the 2 vols. 1797/8 and the Traité 1800 as separate entities. A 2nd edition in 3 volumes appeared 1810 - 1819.
