Originally published December 1895 in the "Sitzungs Bericht der Physikalisch-medicinischen Gesellschaft zu Würzburg, nr. 9, pp. 132 - 141, Röntgen dispatched a small number of offprints early January 1896. From this moment on news of the discovery of the X-ray conquered the world. Translations in many languages followed. The translation here offered is one of two that appeared in England. One version is the one by Arthur Stanton, which appeared in "Nature" on January 23, 1896, the second one is the one here offered which appeared one day later in "The Electrician" of January 24, 1896. Klickstein, p. 71: 'The majority of subsequent contemporary printings of the English rendering of the first communication in both England and the United States were copied from these two translations.': We offer the complete volume 36 of "The Electrician", November 1, 1895 - April 24 1896.
