' ... turned to science, working under Hoffmann and Stahl. Both were professors of medicine who, in their teaching separated chemistry from medical theory and practice. Pott was thus able to study chemistry as a subject in itself. He became professor of theoretical chemistry at the Collegium Medico-Chirurgicum in Berlin where he succeeded Caspar Neumann in 1737 as professor of practical chemistry and director of the royal pharmacy ...Pott's principal contribution to chemistry was in the systematic examination of mineral substances. He extended knowledge of several metals, at a time when the traditional notion of a fixed number of metals was changing. Zinc, which had long been used as a constituent of brass, had only recently been isolated in sufficient quantity for detailed study. Pott characterized it as a distinct metal and prepared a number of its compounds, including zinc sulfate, showing that white vitriol was a compound of zinc and sulfuric acid. He described bismuth fully and added to knowledge of its compounds and those of borax, alkalies, and alkaline earths': Partington II, 717 - 722: 'He was a man of great practical industry and also learned and widely read. ...Pott's numerous separate dissertations were collected in Latin and translated into French [Partington II, 719, III and IV, here offered].': Partington discusses a large number of Pott's dissertations using the French translation which appeared in Paris, 1759 in 12mo, 4 vols. The 'Exercitationes' appeared in the years 1716 - 1732 in Halle, Marburg and Erfurt.: Cole, 1053 'The first collected edition of some of the author's dissertations which had appeared previously in periodicals and as separates' and Cole, 1056: 'A collection of dissertations by Pott including ones on bismuth, zinc and borax. The historical introductions to his essays were useful to T.O.Bergman in composing his dissertations.': Comp. Cole, Chemical Literature p. 435, item 1052 C (French transl. 1759).: On the 'Exercitationes', see Bolton, 750: Duveen, 653: Ferchl, 421: Pogg. II, 509/10: Blake 360: Neu 3345: On the 'Observationes' see Bolton, 750: Hoefer II, 510: Blake, 360 (vol. I only): Ferchl, 421 (altered title).: 'The dissertations on bismuth (1739) and zinc (1741) are both of some importance and when originally published the dissertation on zinc was "in advance of anything published before".' (Cole 1052 note). A good copy.
