DMB 664 - 665: Van Gesscher (1735 - 1810) was a skilled surgeon with an extensive practice in Amsterdam. '...qualified as a surgeon ... 1670. ... Together with A. Bonn he was one of the founders of the "Genootschap ter Bevordering der Heelkunst" ... designed some surgical apparatuses e.g one for administering a tobacco enema... and an instrument for dilating the urethra.': Hirsch vol. III, p. 731: '[Gesscher] ... war der Erfinder der Tabaks-Clystiere (1767) ... wirklich sehr gute Bücher, welche Zeugniss ablegen von des Verfassers ausgedehnter theoretischen Entwicklung und tüchtigen chirurgischen Kenntniss.': BMN vol.
