Paré, and necessitated because of the introduction of syphilis into Europe, stagnated until Fauchard and Bourdet improved the devices in the 18th century. The 19th c. however brought decisive steps forward. Delabarre was the first to try and replace the palate by an artificial palate made of 'Gomme élastique'. In the appendix to his 'Précis' ...Schange put forward the suggestion to attach to the Delabarre obdurator, much admired by him, some solid 'anchors'. Schange also constructed an artificial palate operating with a hinged metal plate. Schange was one of the very first dentists to use metal screws and elastic bands: 'Ein Jahr später (=1841) erwog Schange in Paris gleichfalls die Anwendung der Schraubenwirkung'. (Hoffmann, 409), and 'Ausserdem bediente er sich aber auch eines Gummibandes, die wohl die erste Anwemdung des elastischen Gummis in der Orthodontie.' (Hoffmann, 407).: Rare first edition of Schange's publication dealing with irregularities of the teeth, cleft palate and his suggestions for treatment, as well as the construction and use of artificial palates.
