G&M. mentions an earlier paper (1894) on this subject by Schleich, disregarding this work, which was certainly of epoch making importance: H. of H.1143: 'Although the American surgeon W. Halsted (1852-1922) was the first to utilize subcutaneous infiltration anesthesia in local surgery, Schleich refined and developed the technique for making use of weak cocaine solutions and other liquids'.
