Description: Leyden, 1805. Original folio vellum Diploma, meas. 33 x. 56 cm. Folded 3 times. W. 14 lines of secretarial handwriting. Signed 3 times and dated, 'LUGD: BATAV: ad Diem VI. Februarii, MDCCCV.' With 3 autograph signatures by the then Rector Magnificus Sebald Fulco Johanis RAU, the Dean of the medical Faculty J.J.Brugmans and the 'Ab Actis of the Senate' A. Kluit. Ribbon[s], paper Seal and / or lacquer seal, not present. The slits in the vellum for the 'linten' visible. Lindeboom, DMB, c. 1723: Sandifort, Paulus Johannes [July 6, 1782 - June 19, 1811]. Son of Professor Eduard Sandifort and Catharina Johanna Kinkeed, brother to the [more] famous Gerard Sandifort [1779 - 1848]. Paulus Sandifort studied medicine at Leiden and enrolled in September 1797; he took his medical degree on 6 February 1805 with the thesis 'Deglutitionis mechanismus, verticali sectione natrium, oris, faucium illustratus.' [A dissertation on the swallowing mechanism, or 'deglutition']. [Leiden, S. et J. Luchtmans, 1805, 4to. w. 2 plates.]. In this dissertation his brother Gerard Sandifort, by then a famous (comparative) anatomist and lecturer, was responsible for drawing the 2 vertical dissection plates showing the mouth cavity, pharynx, esophagus, epiglottis etc, later engraved by R.
