Added an engraved portrait ['P. Velijn sculp.' after the painting by Hodges]. Portrait 'te halver lijve' facing left in an oval. 2 large decorations, one of which the Willemsorde.
Description: Folio. Single sheet. [Meas. appr. 20 x 30 cm.]. The rectangular slip of paper w. the signature 'T.F. VdCapellen' meas. appr. 2 x 10.5 cm. Theodorus Frederik van de Capellen [1761 - 1824], Dutch Vice-Admiral, active in the navy from 1772 as 'midshipman' in the mediterranean, North Sea and Channel. African coast and West Indies. In 1785 he joined the fleet of van Kinsbergen in the Mediterranean against the Italians, after that Gibraltar, Tripoli, commanding gunboats against the French in 1792/93. On the disbanding of the Navy corps in 1795, he was discharged, due to his support of Stadholder Willem V. Van de Capellen returned in active Dutch service in 1798 under the command of Daendels. In 1799 when the English landed in North Holland he commanded the ship 'Washington', vd Capellen then remained in England until the 'Omwenteling' of 1813. Appointed Vice - Admiral he assisted in the battle against Algiers in 1816, side by side with the English Admiral Exmouth. He was awarded the 'Grootkruis van de Militaire Willemsorde' and 'Commander of the order of Bath'.
