Author: MOLESCHOTT, Jacob.- ALS.- LOUISE SEYLER [recipient].- 1855 Title: Personal letter by Moleschott [at the moment of writing 23 years of age and banned from lecturing by the government of Baden due to the publication of his 'Kreislauf des Lebens'] in German to 'Fräulein Louise Seyler' in Mainz in which he regrets not being able to meet her personally. Also the worries surrounding the Moleschott household with sickness and 'Mariechen' troubled by teething troubles. Moleschott also confesses that he has 'Sehnsucht nach der Anregung deines Gesangs.... beim schreiben meiner Anthropologie gar sehr zu stellen gekommen wäre...' Moleschott tells her to comfort her parents and not to lose heart, do not take everything so seriously. 'Grüsze die deinigen, empfange von meiner Sophie [Strecker, whom he married in 1849, 2 sons 2 daughters] eine herzlichen Kusz und treues Handdruck von deinem Moleschott'.

On bluish paper, numer. folds into 6 x 5 cm. 23 lines. 1 side only. verso side with address, postal marks, stamp and remains of red lacquer seal. (a few chips and sl. tears on folds.). DSB, vol. IX, p. 456: Lindeboom, DMB, c. 1350 - 1353, Jacobus Albertus Franciscus Moleschott, Physiology. [Den Bosch 1822 - Rome 1893]. Physician, physiologist. Medical student at Heidelberg 1842, wrote a prize winning essay for 'Teyler's Genootschap' on Liebig's plant nutrition theory. Graduated in Heidelberg 1845 and settled in Utrecht where he worked at the laboratory of G.J.Mulder, where he met Is. van Deen and F.C.Donders. Wrote his 'Kreislauf des Lebens' in 1852. At the time of writing this letter he was reprimanded by the Heidelberg University authorities and laid down his office. He was appointed prof. of Physiology at Zurich in 1856. The last part of his life he lived and worked in Italy. 'Moleschott was one of the foremost physiologists at te time; his research was concerned with blood, respiration, the influence of light on respiration, histochemistry, nutrition etc. He was known as a materialistic philosopher.'
