Author: SWINDEREN, TH. van.- ALS.- H.W.TYDEMAN.- Title: Small autograph letter to Professor Tydeman, his cousin, 'Zeer Waarde Neef', in which he informs Tydeman that 'Wachter' awaits the arrival of 'Bakker' before he departs for Germany. He wishes to see a certain part of letter by van Breda and Heynsbergen. Could I trouble you to enclose this passage in your next letter containing material to [Publisher] oomkens. Van Swinderen is happy to announce that, by luck of the draw, he has been 'vrijgeloot als Kanonier Kustbewaarder'. With the conscription of military men for 1808 not even professors, nor for that matter clergymen, were exempt. 'Kneppelhout' did not go to Paris as I incorrectly wrote in my last letter. Verso w. address 'Prof. H.W.Tydeman te Franeker', small remnant of red lacquer seal. (1 p., 1 address side.). Van der Aa, vol. XI, p. 354: NNBW, vol. II, c. 1410: Theodorus van Swinderen [1784 - 1851], professor of Natural History at the University of Groningen [1814] and 'Rector Magnificus' of said University, 1822 - 1823. Founder of the 'Magazijn voor critische Wijsbegeerte en de geschiedenis van dezelve', which coincided with the first student sorority activities in Groningen. With his friend Sibrandus Stratingh he founded the 'Genootschap ter Bevordering der Natuurkundige Wetenschappen', which eventually became the 'Koninklijk Natuurkundig Genootschap'. The recipient of the letter is Prof. Hendrik Willem Tydeman [1778 - 1863], van der Aa, vol. XVIII, p. 262: NNBW, vol. II, c. 1461 - 1462: Professor of Law at Franeker from 13 June 1803, various contributions for the 'Zeeuwsch Genootschap' were awarded w. prizes. 'Professeur du code Napoleon' at Leiden University June 1812. Van der Aa cites a staggering array of functions, society memberships, publications and translations. His relationship with Willem Bilderdijk was quite important. A huge collection of books from his collection was auctioned by Brill, Leiden, 1864 - 1865. Custodian of the Bibliotheca Thysiana. etc.
