'...paved the way for progress in anatomy, physiology and clinical medicine, for 50 percent of the lymphatic vessels, now known were discovered by Mascagni ...In studying the origin of the lymphatic vessels Mascagni established that every vessel must in its course enter one or more lymph glands. He arranged and completed the observations of others and overhauled their techniques. Mascagni also performed experiments, using the mercury injection method and so improving it that it surpassed all preceding techniques... he observed, named, and described nearly all lymphatic glands and vessels of the human body ... Mascagni examined the views of Boerhaave and his followers... After examining the work of Noguez, Hamberger and Hoffmann and the results of his own researches, Mascagni concluded that the lymphatic system originates from the cavities and surfaces of the body, both internal and external, and is related to the absorbing function.': G&M, 1104: 'Mascagni, Professor of anatomy at Siena, made several discoveries regarding the lymphatics. His beautiful atlas contained 41 engravings of the lymphatics and gained him lasting fame.': Choulant Frank, p. 315: Castiglioni, 600 - 601: Waller 6295: Heirs of Hippocrates 684: The plates '... form a landmark in anatomic illustration ... the work contains his contribution with reference to the diapedesis of the corpuscles through the wall of the blood vessels in areas of inflammation.': Norman Collection, 1450: 'The spectacular copperplates by Ciro Santi ... depict vessels in some of the finest detail present in anatomical illustration before the advent of photography.':
