Thesis on the respiratory apparatus of birds w. 6 wonderful handcol. engr. plates. Sappey, 'Recherches sur l'appareil respiratoire des oiseaux' [Paris, 1847], pp. 75 - 77. Sappey describes Fuld as an excellent observer of facts and the first part of his thesis is of the highest quality: 'La première partie, ou la partie anatomique de son travail, qui exigeait seulement un talent d'observation, est vraiment remarquable...'. In fact Fuld, due to his exact observations, unwittingly first described in detail the intricate system of air sacs [birds do not have a diaphragm, but use intercostal and abdominal muscles to expand [inhale] and contract [exhale] their entire thoraco-abdominal cavities, changing the volumes of the air sacs], 'sans comprendre sa nature et sa destination'. Cuvier and Girardi were not as detailed in their work as Fuld, but in the end Fuld failed in 'interpreting' correctly all his beautiful detailed observations. 'Ses recherches sur la structure du poumon forment la partie la plus remarquable de son travail.'.
