Title: Tweede catalogus der in 's Lands Plantentuin te Buitenzorg gekweekte gewassen; opgemaakt door Justus Karl Hasskarl, Assistent-Hortulanus aan 's Lands Plantentuin ...Catalogus plantarum in horto botanico Bogoriensi cultarum alter;
Description: Batavia, Ter Lands-Drukkerij, 1844. 8vo. Limp printed brds. (Spine dam., paper on spine split, but bookblock firm.). (II, 391 pp.). (Uncut.). NNBW III, 550 - 552: Justus Karl Hasskarl (1811 - 1894), botanist. Through the intervention of Prof. Goldfuss Hasskarl was introduced to a Rotterdam shipping merchant who enabled him to travel to the Dutch East Indies. He arrived in Batavia in September 1837. His fellow countryman Dr. Fritze, head of the health service, and Diard, member of the "Natuurkundige Commissie" (Physics committee), asserted their influence and Hasskarl was appointed assistant hortulanus of the botanical gardens at Buitenzorg. Working together with Teysmann, Chief botanist, Hasskarl succeeded in converting the garden into a truly scientific institution and succesfully fended off the attacks from Blume [who compiled the first catalogue, also offered in our stock under "Blume", 1823] and Von Siebold, who directed the Dutch Society for the advancement of agriculture. Hasskarl repatriated in 1843 after 6 years in the tropics due to health reasons. He returned in 1846 and 1854. Hasskarl's main claim to fame was his dangerous and eventfull enterprise, instigated by the Dutch Government in 1852, to go and collect young plants and seeds of the kina tree in South America and transport them to Java. Hasskarl was succesful and he was rewarded with the position of Director of the kina plantations in the rank of assistent - resident. In 1856 he left Java and in 1857 he resigned and settled in Cleef. His main publications are the catalogue of plants 1844 here offered and the publications in which he discusses the kina plant culture.: De Vriese, De Kinaboom uit Z-Amerika overgebragt (1855), i.l.c.: Pritzel, 3842: Not in Smith Diehl, not in Van der Chijs.: Sian nio Tan, 107/8: Wellcome II, 269 (Buitenzorg) & III, 222 (Hasskarl).:
