W. titles printed in red and black, engr. vigns. on titles ['I.C.Philips inv. et fecit. 1731']. 2 engr. fold. pls. at the end of vol. I, part 1, at page (285) [Unsigned.]. Very good contemp. full vellum, author, title, & vol. nr. in ink on spine. (S(Vellum a little wrinkled, age darkened and w. a few spots; corner vol. 2 a small tear / imperf.). Dutch full vellum : Blake, p. 181: DMB, c. 699 - 701 Gorter (1689 - 1762), clinical medicine. 'Matriculated as a medical student at Leiden 1709, where he dilligently attended Boerhaave's lectures... ': After the death of Herman Kau Boerhaave in Russia (1753) De Gorter was tempted to go to Russia and work for Czarina Elisabeth in St Petersburg, the terms and conditions agreed upon were extremely profitable for both de Gorter and his son David de Gorter. After 4 years De Gorter returned to Holland in 1758 and settled in Wijk bj Duurstede. One wonders if he ever felt at ease in Russia and / or in Court circles. The original edition of the Compendium was published 1731 - 1737 and was translated into Japanese by Jenzui Udagawe. Together with the 'Gezuiverde Heelkonst'[ 1731 in 8vo], the 'Oratio' [1731] here bound up in vol. I of this reprint, belong to the earliest body of work published by de Gorter in the period 1727 - 1731.
