Title: Ueber einen Einfluss des ultravioletten Lichtes auf die electrische Entladung.
Description: Leipzig, J.A.Barth, 1887. W. 1 fold. plate. (18 pp.). (Annalen der Physik, vol. 31, 1887, pp. 983 - 1000). DSB VI, 340-350: 'Early in the course of his Karlsruhe experiments (ab. 1886 onwards) Hertz noticed that the spark of the detector circuit was stronger when it was exposed to the light of the spark of the primary circuit. After meticulous investigation in which he interposed over 60 substances between the primary and secondary sparks, he published his conclusion in 1887 that THE ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT ALONE was responsible for the effect - the photoelectric effect. He was convinced that the effect had profound theoretical meaning for the connection of light and electricity, ...Hertz, however, did no more work on it, since it was a digression from his original purpose - the examination of the physical assumptions of Maxwell's theory.':
