W. wonderful 3 quarter page engraved vignette on the printed title [Unsigned], depicting a globe in the center and a large group of 18 men surrounding it, all engaged in measuring, plotting and calculating, using the Jacobs staf, maps, books, hourglass, quadrant, compasses. 4 ships in the background, Poseidon, Neptune looking on. A decorated border w. 2 putti holiding compasses. W. a total of 96 engr. pls. [of which 81 folding], divided over subjects as geometry, astronomy, wine gauging, gnomonics, drawing & perspective, fortification, dioptrics etc. Furthermore a plethora of algebraic & mathematical notations in the text. Contemp. full clf., 'cap' at top & bottom of spine gone, head-bands intact, lower edge rubbed, corners bumped & some dam. Spine w. elaborate gilttooling, 6 compartments, original brown title shield. Gilttooling and lettering a little faded. Both covers w. a decorated border consisting of double blindruled and double giltruled lines. [*4, **4, A - Z4, Aa - Rr4]. (XVI, 318, II pp.). (leaf T1, pp. 145 - 146, lower blank margin a square cut out, ca. 5 x 2.5 cm, no loss of printed surface(Upper free endp. w. an owner's signature in ink. '...???'). (Remains of wax seals on paste down endpapers.). BdH 1764 [1st edition, 1674], reprinted [here offered] in 1694. Also in 1708, 1737. A very good copy of de Graaf's authoritative work, the large number of folding pls. all of excellent quality.
