Zacutus Lusitanus, also known as Abraham Zacuth, born in Lisbon 1575 as Manuel Alvares de Tavora, died January 1642 in Amsterdam. His first work was published in Amsterdam in 1629 'De Medicorum principium historia' , followed by 5 further publications in this series up to 1642. Friedenwald, I, p. 295 - 321, see specifically vol. I, p. 319 [Ibid., id., slight variants in wording]: Hirsch V, pp. 1021 - 1022: Kayserling, 110: '... Zacutus Lusitanus, famous because of his learning, outstanding account of his skill in healing ... His main strength is revealed in his accurate clinical description of plague, diphteria, exanthematous diseases, and malignant tumors; he was one of the first to describe blackwater fever.(A.Nahmias)': Krivatsy 13204: 'constitues praxis historiarum VIII': With an introdcution by Rene Moreau (Paris, June 1639) and B. Mussaphia (Hamburg, April 1640) and laudatory poems by Jac. Fabricius, C.Sponius, J.I.Pontanus, J. de Lalovel, and a more elaborate poem by J. Rosales (16 pp.)., friend of Galileo and Zacutus 'and likewise an exiled Jewish physician, writes a poem in which he calls Zacutus "the one who has replenished anew the ancient glory of medicine, enabling her again to celebrate triumphs" . The publication of these flattering letters and poems led to the view that Zacutus was very vainglorious. We must remember that the custom of that period permitted such publication.'
