Title: Autograph letter signed. In French dated 'Amsterdam 30 May 1808' addressed to J.F.Hennert, Utrecht, among other things thanking him for a received 'Mémoire'. With further personal recollections of the time when Hennert was van Swinden's tutor at Leyden university.
Description: Amsterdam, autograph, 1808. [30 Avril]. Folio. [Meas. appr. 19 x 23 cm.]. 5 folds into 8 x 11 cm letter shape. 23 lines of text, 1 line for the signature and date. (IV pp.). (=1 page text, 2 blank, 1 address side). (remnants of paper seal; due to the breaking of the seal a piece of paper at the opposite blank side missing.). (Paper nicely watermarked Crowned heraldic shield, post 'Horn', 'D & C Blaauw', Churchill, comp. 328, '18th c.'). DSB vol. XIII, pp. 183 - 184: Van der Aa, S, pp. 351 - 353: Van Swinden [1746 - 1823] was a phycisist, mathematician and astronomer. He represented the Dutch Republic during the highly important talks / symposium on 'weights and measures' in Paris in 1798. He is also well-known for his description of Eise Eisinga's planetarium in Franeker. On Hennert, see van der Aa, H, pp. 186 - 187. Hennert [1733 - 1813] was a physician and astronomer, educated by de Sulzer and Euler. Van Swinden was Hennert's pupil.
