The author writes in his introductory "Letters to a Friend": "My purpose, in these few pages, is to invite you to wander around in our provinces, from Flanders to Wallonia, from Wallonia to Flanders, through Brabant looking for that 'multiple splendor' of a country whose narrow borders make all the more astonishing its vast natural and artistic variety." .
