Blue cloth with a few scattered speckles, rubbing and faded at extremeties, now protected by mylar jacket. Bumping to spine head and foot, with fraying hereto. Tight binding, with toning to text, especially to endpapers. Previous owner's inscription, neatly rendered on front pastedown. In Tall Cotton item #14, justifiably important volume, an initial foray into psychological histories and portraits of leading Civil War generals and leaders. Dornbusch IV, 9372, says "One of the earliest 'psychographs' and about the only volume of its type to survive the more demanding techniques of later historians." 8 black-and-white plates. Portraits of Joseph E. Johnston, J.E.B. Stuart, James Longstreet, P.G.T. Beauregard, Judah P. Benjamin, Robert Toomes, Raphael Semmes, as well as a chapter on the Battle of Gettysburg.
