The English naturalist Henry Walter Bates explored the upper reaches of the Amazon and its Tapajos tributary with Alfred Russel Wallace, starting in 1848. Wallace returned to England in 1852, but Bates continued on until 1859, during which time he located thousands of new species not previously known to science. His findings were summarized in this volume, offered in a compact Everyman's Library edition. Includes numerous black & white illustrations, and maps of the rivers; as well as an appreciation by Charles Darwin.
