A complete, 2-volume Everyman's Library set of William Makepeace Thackeray's semi-autobiographical novel, published in installments from 1848 to 1850, just after his "Vanity Fair." The story follows the progression of young Arthur Pendennis, known to friends as 'Pen.' Many of the characters in this work also appear in other Thackeray novels, such as "The Newcomes" and "The Adventures of Philip." With an introduction by Walter Jerrold. EL catalogue number 425 & 426 in their "Fiction" series, edited by Ernest Rhys. --- In 'flatback' binding style 1, full ribbed red cloth-covered boards with elaborate Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover, dark topstain and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title page, endpapers & frontis. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- Both copies with prior owner's signature to front free endpaper; v.2 is lighter in color than v.1 & has slightly warped boards & partial split at front of book (which doesn't affect the stability of the binding), spine gilding on v.1 is brighter than on v.2. V.1 with pencilings to a couple of leaves; otherwise books lack interior markings.; 16mo - 6 to 7 in. tall; xx, 394, viii, 394 pages. Very Good- with no dust jacket .
