Purported to be the first published work by Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), this work is seemingly an account of a short river trip from Concord, Massachusetts to Concord, New Hampshire and back with his brother, John. Thoreau made many digressions, including poems, essays on diverse topics and quotations by others. Written from 1845-47, Thoreau had difficulty getting the book published, which finally occurred in 1849. This reprint edition with an introduction by Charles R. Anderson, and illustrations by R. J. Holden. --- Bound in green cloth-covered boards with spine titling and decorations in gilt. Sandglass leaflet laid in (Norwalk, no serial no.). Volume housed in pale green paper-covered slipcase. --- With conspicuous sunning to spine, else a bright, clean, tightly-bound copy but with moderately sunned spine.
