A deluxe edition presenting Charles Darwin's landmark work on human evolution, which appeared over 20 years after his visit to the Galapagos Islands on the ship Beagle. With tissue-guarded sepia frontis portrait of Darwin, as well as a tissue-guarded facsimile of a page from Darwin's notebook and a folded chart depicting the evolution of various life forms after many generations. One from a rather scarce version of the series, "The Harvard Classics" as published by P. F. Collier, edited by Charles W. Eliot. Includes an introduction by Eliot, and another by Darwin. --- In dark red buckram cloth-covered boards with titling and Harvard crest, and Charles Eliot's facsimile signature in gilt on the cover; gilt-stamped spine titling. TEG (top edge gilt), other edges deckled and with dark red ribbed endpapers. Lacks a dust jacket. --- A well-preserved copy: clean, tightly-bound and a sound though with slightly loosened front & rear hinges, a little wear to cover extremities and mild darkening to spine.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; (4), 553 pages. Very Good with no dust jacket .
