This publication detailed, in words and pictures, the workings of the first successful cable car company to operate in San Francisco, the Clay Street Hill Railroad which began in 1873. The intention of the company was to generate funding for more lines, and to encourage other cities and towns to consider a traction railroad system, (best known as a "cable car" system). With 29 pages of text and tables, and 26 pp. showing detailed drawings of cars and operating mechanisms. This facsimile was published by the City of San Francisco as part of their 1973 celebration of the centennial of the first cable car line. --- In stiff tan stapled wraps with image of two cable cars climbing a hill in San Francisco. --- An excellent copy: clean and sound though with light smudges from removed stickers to front cover & first page. ; Small Quarto - 9 to 11 in. tall; 29, (26) pages.
