Description: New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1941. Hardcover. A later printing of Margaret Leech's description of Washington D. C. during the U.S. Civil War. The city was transformed into a sort of army camp, with troops bivouaced wherever space could be found: in the Capitol rotunda, even in the corridors of the U.S. Patent Office. With three sections of black & white plates showing Washington scenes, and endpaper maps of the city. This work was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1942. --- In full blue cloth-covered boards with gilt-stamped spine titling and cover and spine decorations in red. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- The binding is a little shaken but remains stable, with prior owner's signature to half title page, white splotches to back cover and with somewhat tanned leaves.; Tall Octavo - 9 to 10 in. tall; x, 483 pages. Good+ with no dust jacket .
