An undated, modern facsimile of the original 1859 edition of Captain Randolph Marcy's guide for the traveler in the American West. With all manner of helpful advice for journeying, such as fording rivers, care of horses and wagons, firearms, camp furniture, Indians, navigating, etc. With several black & white drawings. Originally published by authority of the U. S. Government's War Dept. The author was a West Point graduate who rose to the rank of Brevet Major General during the Civil War. With endpaper maps showing major roads leading west. The publisher name Filler and Ochs appears at tail of spine on book and on jacket; Nicholas Books name appears on jacket. Possibly published c.1960s. --- Bound in full ivory cloth-covered boards with titling in gilt to spine and on maroon spine block. Dust jacket with sepia-toned image of wagons entering canyon country. --- With plenty of evidence of past ownership by a college library: stickers, pocket, embossed circular stamp & rubberstampings; otherwise a clean, bright, sturdy copy. Jacket with mild sunning to spine and a few small chips & tears to edges, else intact and in wrapped in new removable archival mylar protector.; Book Club Edition; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; xiii, 15-340 pages. Good in Good dust jacket .
