Originally built starting in 1879 by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, the line ran from Alamosa, Colorado to Chama, New Mexico and ceased operations in 1967. However, a joint effort by the two states resulted in the 1970 rebirth of the line, renamed the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad.
