Description: W. H. Allen, London,1956, 1st edn., 200pp, seventeen half tone photo illustrations on 8pp, red cloth lettered in gilt at spine, coloured photo-pictorial dustwrapper, leaves from the log book of a British airwoman in war and peace including the first full story of the Air Transport Auxiliary. The author qualified as a pilot in the Civil Air Guard but on the outbreak of WW2 the Guard was disbanded. and she was told that they would not be needed in the RAF except on ground duties and then only in 'the ranks'. She was certain that this policy would be reversed and in the meantime sought employment elsewhere becoming an ambulance driver with the London Ambulance Volunteer Service. After a couple of months the policy was reversed and she joined the ATA, becoming a flight captain and ferrying fighter and bomber aircraft to operational stations later for repair, occasionaly carrying teenagers from the ATC who were too young for military service but acted as air crew in the heavier aircraft. Her service with ATA continued to the end of the war but her memoir contues with accounts of her further flying exzperiences with civilian aircraft ferrying enterprises all over the world, edges a little tanned, three line ink inscr. front free endpaper from Veronica, small Tippex mark front free endpaper, dustwrapper: rubbed with some chipping to spine ends and tips, very good in a good plus dustwrapper,
