Oxford, 1999, large print reprint, paperback, 230 pp, double page map, line drawings in text, pictorial upper wrapper, the memoirs of an RAF Mosquito pilot, the author joined the Royal Air Force after one year at Magdalen College, Oxford with basic training at Blackpool followed by cadet training at Torquay, starting flying training at Stoke on Trent in May 1941 on Miles Magisters. The next stage of training was on Oxfords at Kidlington graduating in September 1941. After training his first posting was to OTU 42 at Andover for Army Co-Operation, flying Blenheims. These were superceded by Bostons and in November his crew was allotted to him, Sgt. Hinds as navigator and Sgt. Dean as gunner, joining their first squadron, 88 at Attlebridge in Norfolk. After another training run the port engine failed as he approached the runway and he crashed breaking his pelvis in several places and putting him in hospital for several months. When passed fit for flying he was posted to RAF Marham on 1655 Mosquito Training Unit. After a Mosquito night flying course he was joined by Flying Officer George Hocdder and posted to 139 (Jamaica) Squadron. After ten operations they were given a week's leave but the author stayed on for one more operation to Duisberg with Sq, Ldr, Price navigating. An engine problem disturbed the usual routine. They managed to bomb their target but after turning for home the problem engine caught fire. They bailed out separately over what was later found to be Holland and the author started his attempt to reach Spain on foot. He was passed from group to group of the resistance until eventually betrayed in France. He was sent to Stalag Luft III and relates his and other various escape attempts until transfer to a camp outside Nuermburg.in March, 1945, the confusion of liberation by the Americans and eventual repatriation after re-joining his old sqquadron at Brussels, a little rubbed and creased at extrems., library stamp to verso of title and label to half title, edges lightly tanned, very good reading copy,
