Description: Hutchinson, London, ND copyright 1989, [x], 581pp, 16pp half tone photo ills., 9 in text maps, large format (9.5 x 6" approx.), dark blue cloth lettered in silver at spine, coloured pictorial dustwrapper, the memoirs of Field Marshal Lord Carver, commissioned into the Royal Tank Corps in 1935 as a 2nd Lieutenent he was with the 7th Armoured Division fighting against the Italians in North Afica 1941, twice mentioned in dispatches and awarded an MC in September 1942, promoted Captain in January 1943 he was appointed temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in command of 1st Battalion, Royal Tank Regiment in April 1943 in North Africa and awarded a DSO in May 1943, and leading them in Italy he was awarded a bar to his DSO in February 1944. He was appointed to command the 4th Armoured Brigade in June 1944 in North West Europe. He did not attain the substantive rank of Major until after WW2 in January 1948 after which he was regularly advanced seeing service in Kenya, Rhodesia, Cyprus and Northern Ireland, eventually becoming a Field Marshal in July 1973 and Chief of the Defence Staff in October 1973, retiring in 1976, faint foxing to lightly tanned edges, small ownership label friont free endpaper, dustwrapper: lightly rubbed at tips, very good plus in a very good plus dustwrapper,
