His first successful combat was on 30th August against a Dornier 17. At the end of August the squadron received notice to move into 11 Group and their first new base of Kenley and later Biggin Hill. He took command and relates the loss of comrades and his own close calls until 1942 when he was transferred to a non-operational role for a rest, spending the next years liaising with the USAAF, as advisor to the British army's airborne forces, in staff apointments at 11 and 12 Group HQ, organising the Victory Flypast, etc. After the war he converted to jets and flew the Gloster Meteor. He accepted an appointment as Air Defence Advisor to the Government of the Netherlands for thee years before commanding a RAF Meteor Squadron at Tangmere, being posted to Leuchars and then further Staff appointments, wrappers rubbed and creased, ring mark upper wrapper, spine creased but still square, edges well tanned, good,
