Description: Panther, London, 1959, reprint, paperback, 186pp, [vi] ads., coloured pictorial upper wrapper by Mortelmans, an account of the Royal Marines during WW2, traditionally the naval infantry detachment on HM ships providing the first fighting units to be landed and also manning at least one gun on the larger ships, by WW2 the strength had been run down to about 12,000, many fewer than at the beginning of WW1. Recruitment and training began in earnest and after the invasion of Norway detachments landed at Namsos to secure the harbour for the British expeditionary force and also saw action at Narvik. After occupying Iceland the Marines became a major element of the Commandos, forming nine separate RM Commandos each of of battalion strength before the end of the war.
